Cooking with your kids can be a fun way to introduce them to basic math principles. Small children can practice counting by measuring the cups of flour needed or by counting the correct number of eggs.

Kids can practice addition and multiplication, depending on their skill level, by doubling or tripling recipes. To start, give your child a copy of the recipe and ask him to write out the measurements for each ingredient. Once your child is able to do this easily, let him do the calculations in his head while measuring.

Cooking can also be a great way to teach fractions. Find a recipe that uses a lot of fractional measurements and let your child give you the ingredients. For a more advanced task, only let your child use one or two sizes of measuring cups or spoons. You can also have your child double or triple the recipe for you as mentioned previously.

As you teach your child through cooking, be sure to monitor his measuring and calculations to ensure that he is doing them correctly. Cooking is a fun way to teach math and shows your child how important math can be, no matter what his profession.

With the advent of standardized testing in the education community, more children than ever before are suffering from test taking anxiety. There are a few measures you can take to reduce child anxiety while test taking.

For parents and teachers alike, prepare the children for the test beforehand. This includes informing the children that a test will be taken in the near future. Often, if children know a test is approaching, they are better able to manage the anxiety. Unexpected and surprise testing causes a greater amount of stress in children than a test that is planned.

Encouragement should not be understated in regards to children, anxiety and test taking. Often times, a simple kind word or statement of validation is enough to ease the fears of children who suffer from test taking anxiety. By parents and teachers taking the time to calm their worries with a kind word, children will be calm and collected when the time to take the test arrives. If they know that their parents and teachers believe in them, then they are more likely to do well.

By following these simple and easy steps in handling tests, children and the anxiety it produces, educators and parents alike are taking a proactive role in diminishing test anxiety.

Are you looking for a way to help your child skim the reading fat? Skimming while reading is a tool that helps students read faster and get more out of their studying time. Speed reading has been taught a number of years with proven success. In today’s online world, your child is already familiar with reducing information to key concepts with texts and social media. A skill you might have thought useless before can be transferred to improving their study habits. Picking out keywords and concepts are the core concepts of skimming the reading fat.

There are some tips to help you get started. Tip number one is to identify the concepts to learn. Do this by having the student read through the study questions beforehand. Also, read over the table of contents to get an understanding of the layout of the text the student is studying. Tip number two is to suggest your student use their hand or finger to run across the text as they read. This will help the eye continue the flow through the sentences without interruption. The key to speed reading is to not read every word on the page. With time and practice you will find your child can read the information quickly and grasp the lesson with greater ease. What’s 1 more click?
